trends for 2008, post three: bob powers
This is the third in a series wherein I solicit thoughts from some of my favorite creative thinkers about what they think 2008 (and beyond) might look like.
This installment comes courtesy of Bob Powers. Bob is the brilliance behind the Girls Are Pretty website and its companion book, Happy Cruelty Day. I recommend both if you’re the sort of person who likes to laugh.
2007 saw the “Unwanted Pregnancy Sci-Fi” genre of film go mainstream, when audiences flocked to screenings of “Juno” and “Knocked Up” to glimpse an alternate America where intelligent young women who accidentally get pregnant have no choice but to carry their babies to term. 2008 will welcome yet another genre, the “Woman Deals With An Unwanted Pregnancy By Having An Abortion” comedy, wherein a pregnant woman gets an abortion and then experiences relief. No one will see it.
The success of the Nintendo Wii and games like Guitar Hero among adults will lead video game wizards to come up with even more ways to get adults to play with plastic toys and pretend to be able to do stuff they don’t know how to do. Next Christmas, expect to see “Cooking Hero,” “Loving My Children Hero,” and “Bringing My Wife To Climax Hero” to be the games that are flying off the shelves.
And of course, in 2008 the seas will boil and the sun will burst and Osama Bin Laden will vacation in Acapulco because he is free to do as he wishes.
