trends for 2008, post two: armin vit
This is the second post in a series wherein I solicit thoughts from some of my favorite creative thinkers about what they think 2008 (and beyond) might look like.
This installment comes courtesy of Armin Vit. Armin is a true force in the creative world and the brains (with his wife Bryony) behind must-read sites Speak Up, Quipsologies, and Brand New.
2007 was the year of the (mostly) ironic use of cheesy display typefaces like ITC Grouch, Bookman (even we used it in our Word It Book),
Sinaloa and a dozen other kooky typefaces that were once the provenance of Letraset rubdowns and EyeWire CD bundles of 5000+ fonts. And, boy, was it fun.
This year however I feel a resurgence of late 90s sans serif typography about to make a comeback, in some cases full of irony. Erik Spiekermann’s Meta and Officina Sans and Albert Jan-Pool’s FF Din will lead the charge. In 2007 I was one of the judges for the Type Directors Club annual and there was a LOT of Meta in there; the book, Typography 28, just got published so it’s time for the trend to sip into designers’ subconscious. You’ll see.
My real wish for a trend to pick up though, is the use of Optima. It’s been far too long the default typeface of cheap cologne packaging, I think its shining time will soon come.
