why rachael ray works

rachael rayThere’s a reason she has been so successful, and it’s not just because her 30 Minute Meals are just that tasty.

I’ve been thinking about Rachael Ray lately, ever since her picture spent a few months on a billboard gazing down on me from high above the JFX. She was hawking a drink from Dunkin’ Donuts, and the copy read “Quick and delicious. Is quilicious a word?”

It’s a pretty goofy message, and her picture was even more so. Yet I couldn’t shake a weird kind of happiness every time I drove past it. She just seemed so damned nice.

Which led me to thinking about how this girl-next-door managed to become the head of a mini media empire. While there (of course) isn’t just one reason, there is one reason that I haven’t really seen addressed anywhere else: her unabashed lack of cynicism.

Cynicism creates a distance, a sense that one can remain above it all. That approach has its place, but it comes at a cost. Now and then it’s refreshing to see someone who openly embraces the notion of simply having fun. By letting herself be a little goofy, Rachael Ray has filled a need.

It wouldn’t work for everyone, but it’s worth keeping in mind. People respond when they see that you’re enjoying yourself.
